Hormones

Trouble with Hormones -
What Now?

You might have heard the phrases “they are being so hormonal” or “must be the hormones.” These phrases may have even been directed at you at one point or another.  People tend to use them when referencing emotional distress that another person is experiencing, often a teenager or preteen may be involved.  And it is true that an imbalance in the hormones can be the culprit.  The bad news is that hormones are involved in more than just emotions that we experience and unfortunately hormone related issues can be experienced in adulthood as well.  The good news is that there are several steps you can take if you are experiencing symptoms related to hormonal imbalances.

Thyroid Glands

When experiencing a health issue, the first thing to do is gather knowledge.  To know about hormones you first should know that the thyroid glands, in conjunction with the pituitary gland, have the job of producing hormones needed by the body.  The pituitary gland produces thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).  TSH tells the thyroid to produce more hormones (namely the T3 and T4) if it is not producing enough and it tells the thyroid to slow down production of these hormones when it is producing too much.  When the thyroid gland and pituitary gland are functioning correctly your hormones will be balanced and you should feel healthy and balanced as well.

Functions of Thyroid Hormones

Among other things, the T3 and T4  help to control the adrenaline and dopamine in the body.  Hormones are responsible for regulating the metabolic rate, heart rate, temperature, digestions, menstrual cycle, weight loss and gain and more.  When there are normal T3 and T4 levels, things stay balanced.

When there is an imbalance in your hormones (for example, low T3, low T4, high T3 or high T4), that is when problems occur.  There are several symptoms you may experience  if you have a problem with your thyroid, or more specifically a hormone imbalance.  Among them are:

  • fatigue

  • weight gain

  • weight loss

  • thinning hair

  • mood swings

  • decreased sex drive

  • fast heart rate

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • infertility

  • irregular menstrual cycle

If you are concerned that you could be dealing with a hormonal imbalance you can book an appointment to get more information.  Another way to learn about your health is a Zyto Scan.  You can learn more about how you can have a health scan using this technology as well as book an appointment to have one done either virtually or in person here.

Hormones

Why are hormones important?  These chemical messengers help with communication in our body to stimulate or inhibit cells and glands to produce a particular substance.  Basically they tell our cells and glands what to do.  Too many or too few of these hormones creates further chaos in our bodies which can result in the symptoms listed in the previous section. There can be many factors that lead to this imbalance. Poor diet, medical conditions as well as medication side effects can all lead to an imbalance in hormones. Aging can also lead to an imbalance. Some of these things can be controlled, but the next logical step is to begin correcting the imbalance. Supplements that can help with you if you are dealing with imbalanced hormones are:

Thyroid endocrine support system - this is one supplement that can be beneficial.  This supplement helps to restore the body’s optimal thyroid function as well as encourage T4 production.

Balance Natural Hormone Therapy - if you are experiencing irregular menstrual cycles this is a supplement to consider as it assists with healthy menstrual cycles.  It can also lessen the appearance of hormone induced pigmentation on your skin.

DHEA anti aging supplement - you cannot turn back the clock and change your age but you can work to fight it a little.  DHEA production declines beginning at age 20 which triggers aging.  This supplement can help with slowing natural changes  (like hormonal imbalance) that come with age.

Balancing Hormones Naturally

There are some steps you can take to begin feeling better.  There are natural ways to balance hormones.  Some changes to consider trying are:

  • get enough sleep

  • limit exposure to toxins

  • maintain a healthy weight

  • address stress

  • exercise

  • limit caffeine

As you can see from the list, doing one of the items can often help with others.  For instance if you choose to get enough sleep you may also reduce your stress as you will be well rested and better able to deal with stressful situations.  Adding exercise to your routine will help you to maintain a healthy weight and can also help with stress.  Don’t feel overwhelmed by the list, pick one thing to get started with and then book an appointment to learn other options and have help while you make these changes.

Supplements can also help you begin to feel better.  You can visit the Wellness Shop to see more options, but a couple to consider are:

Evening Primrose Oil - if one of your goals is to lose weight this is a supplement to look into.  It helps lower weight without dieting.  In addition it also improves acne when taken with zinc, relieves premenstrual pain and raises metabolism.
